OPENREBORN

Open source · Reconstructed · No original data

Classics, rebuilt.
From the CDs you own.

OpenReborn reimplements classic games in modern technology — every mechanic reconstructed from the original binaries before it is written. What ships is code, not content: maps, graphics, fonts and texts are derived on your own machine, from the discs you own.

What is being built

One project is playable, more are in preparation. Progress always lands in the repository first.

Akte Europa Reborn

The 1997 real-time strategy game, reimplemented in Godot 4 and C#.

A faithful reimplementation of "Akte Europa" (1997). Skirmishes and the 33-mission campaign are playable. Not a single byte of the original ships with it — the program derives maps, graphics, fonts and texts from your own CDs on first launch.

Kessel

An MMORPG in Unity — in development.

Not a remake but something of its own: an MMORPG built in Unity. The project is still mid-development, so there is deliberately nothing here yet about the world, the rules or the schedule. More once there is something to show.

How it works

Three rules that are not up for debate

01

Reconstruction, not imitation

Every mechanic is read out of the original binary before it is implemented — even where inventing something would be quicker. A reading only counts once there is a number behind it.

02

No one else's content

Not a single byte of the original is redistributed. The program derives everything from your own discs. No original, no game — and no legal grey area either.

03

Open and checkable

The full source is on GitHub under GPL-3.0. What comes from the data and what is our own assumption is kept apart and named in the code.

Support

This is spare time, not a product

OpenReborn is unpaid work on evenings and weekends: opening up file formats, checking numbers against the data, withdrawing misreadings. If you value that, you can leave something behind — none of it is required to use the projects.

Free, and still helps

Report bugs, test the format readers, star the repository, tell someone. For a niche project, visibility is worth more than money.
